The GF-EM-100
is an easy-to-use Ethernet-to-Serial Converter that allows you
to connect any existing RS232-based Device to the 10BaseT Ethernet
LAN. There are several ways in which you can communicate with
the GF-EM-100:
COM
port redirection - If you want to continue using existing
PC/Windows software (that was meant to communicate with your Serial
Device directly, via the RS232), then our Virtual Serial Port
Driver (VSPD) is the solution for you. VSPD creates a number of
Virtual Serial Ports on your PC. Each port works exactly like
a normal hardware port but in reality reroutes the data via the
TCP/IP network. With the VSPD installed you can continue using
your PC software as if your Serial Device was still attached to
the PC’s Serial port.
Direct
Socket Communications - If you are creating your own
PC software, then you can communicate with the GF-EM-100 directly.
Modern software design packages like Visual Basic from Microsoft
make it extremely easy to send and receive UDP packets. Our Application
Note Using VB to communicate with the GF-EM-100 provides a detailed
information on this subject.
Virtual
Serial Link - If you are using a non-PC device to communicate
with the GF-EM-100 or your PC is not running Windows, then you
can use two GF-EM-100s to form a virtual serial link over the
TCP/IP network. This way you will still have a simple RS232 interface
on both sides of the link.
